The Handoff | The Children You Were Born To Raise. What Happened? | Day 5

God never intended His work to stop with one generation. Every generation is responsible for teaching, guiding, and preparing the next, not only our own children, but every young person God places in our lives. Every legacy we've ever admired started with someone letting go or someone stepping in.

God, thank You for this day and for the faith that got passed down to us. Whether it's our own children, grandchild, or someone else's, help us to hand down what matters - Your truth, Your Word, and a life that honours You. In Jesus' name, amen.

In 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22, beginning at verse 10 and continuing through the end of chapter 23, we read about Queen Athaliah's attempt to destroy the royal family so that no one could challenge her throne.

But one baby survived: Joash. His aunt, Jehosheba, secretly rescued him and hid him in the temple. Then the Bible goes quiet. For six years, we hear almost nothing. Joash remains hidden, and God's promise seems forgotten. But behind the scenes, Jehosheba was faithfully protecting the child God had preserved. When the time was right, her husband, the high priest Jehoiada, stepped forward. He gathered trusted leaders, armed the guards, brought Joash out of hiding, crowned him king, and ended Athaliah's reign. What Jehosheba began in secret, Jehoiada faithfully carried through to completion.

Same shape as Jochebed and Miriam in Exodus 2. One person lets go and trusts, another finishes it years later. But no river, no princess, no visible rescue. Just a hidden decision and a long silence before it pays off.

But remember Deborah, "a mother in Israel" with no children of her own mentioned in the Bible. Then there was Naomi, raising Obed’s whole household through wisdom and presence, though he wasn’t hers by birth.

The handoff God cares about was never only about biology. It’s about whoever is willing to invest.

Whether you’re a parent watching a grown child figure out how to stand on their own, a grandparent raising a second generation you didn’t plan for, or someone with no children of your own pouring into a young person who needs it, you’re carrying the same original assignment.

It was never meant to end with you or me. It’s meant to move, from whoever’s willing, into whoever’s next.

So, we may be tired. We may feel at times like we're doing this alone, perhaps later in life than expected, or for a child that technically isn't "yours." Can I tell you? None of that disqualifies you. In fact, it qualifies you for exactly the role Scripture keeps highlighting: the one who stayed, when staying wasn't easy.

Isaiah 58 talks about that kind of staying. Verse 7 says not to "hide thyself from thine own flesh"; don't turn away from the one who's yours by love, even if not by blood. Verse 10 says if you "draw out thy soul" for someone in need, pouring yourself out even when you're tired, your light will rise even in the dark places. And then verse 12 names what that costly staying produces: "thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations... and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in."

Family, God has always used ordinary people to preserve extraordinary futures. He is still looking for men and women who will repair what is broken and restore a path for those coming behind them.

If that's you, don't underestimate your assignment. Every child we encourage, every young person we mentor, every life we quietly influence is another brick in the foundation of generations to come.

So what are we saying to encourage ourselves as we close this series?

We may not be the one who lives to see the children we raised get saved. Our part may only be to hold on, to hide, to raise, to stay, to pray. But somewhere down the line, someone is standing on what we carried, and that is the handoff: not finishing the work, but faithfully passing it on.

So, stay faithful, parents. The God who sees in secret is building a legacy through us.
