Day 2: The Holy Spirit Is Not a House Guest: What Happens When We Open Doors | God Forbid. The Sin of Presumption

Gehazi witnessed God's power through Elisha with his own eyes, yet he still believed he could get away with a little greed. Today's question is not whether God is with us, but whether we have convinced ourselves that He does not see the things we try to hide.

Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. Search our hearts and show us anything that does not please You. Help us turn away from wrong desires and live in a way that honours You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Gehazi was a servant of the prophet Elisha who witnessed many of God's miracles firsthand. Although he had a close connection to God's work, he became known for his greed and deception when he secretly sought gifts that God had not authorised him to receive (2 Kings 5).

He had a front-row seat to the supernatural. He served Elisha, watched Naaman get healed of leprosy, and he was a witness that everything his master had came from God alone and could not be bought, earned, or manipulated.

So, when Naaman offered gifts, and Elisha refused them, Gehazi made a decision in private: “As the LORD liveth, I will run after him and take somewhat of him” (2 Kings 5:20). He lied to get silver and garments, hid them, and then lied again to Elisha's face about where he went.

Sin after sin after sin after sin! One to cover up the other. Do we see what’s happening here? Have we ever found ourselves in that position?

For Gehazi, it was from covetousness to secret disobedience, from deception to concealment, and from one lie to another. Gehazi allowed a single greedy desire to open the door to deeper compromise. One compromise opened the door to another until his heart drifted far from the truth he had been called to serve.

Elisha's response cuts through every excuse Gehazi might have prepared: “Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee?” (2 Kings 5:26). Gehazi assumed that what was done in secret would stay in secret. He never considered that God had witnessed every step.

If we're honest, there is a little of Gehazi's story in all of us. Some of us are holding on to things in secret that God is calling us to bring into the open so we can finally be free.

The book of Haggai paints the same problem from a different angle; not secret sin, but quiet neglect.

God's people had become so consumed with their own houses, their own comfort, their own priorities, that His house sat unfinished. “Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little” (Haggai 1:9).

Their resources weren't increasing because their focus had shifted away from what mattered to God. Neglect and presumption are cousins. One comes through carelessness, the other through overconfidence. But both lead to the same place: a heart that stops paying attention to God.

Here's the thing, Family: the Holy Spirit is not a houseguest who shows up for the parts of our lives we invite Him into. The Holy Spirit lives in us, permanently, not occasionally. That means every door we open isn't opened in isolation; it's opened in His presence.

Gehazi wasn't offending a distant God. He was disregarding the God who had been with him every step of the journey to and from Naaman's chariot and, according to Ephesians 4:30, he grieved the Holy Spirit.

So today, let us examine these doors we have opened in our lives. Not just the obvious ones, but the secret compromises, the things we'd never say out loud. And not just those, but the quiet neglect as well, the slow drift where God is no longer first in our hearts, priorities, or decisions.

I leave us with this thought: Every open door starts small: a thought entertained, a boundary softened, a justification rehearsed.

Family, the answer was never fear. It's surrender: prayer, fasting, worship, and obedience that keep our hearts aligned, so that nothing finds room to move in where the Spirit already lives.
