Some coverings work until pressure comes. Some supports remain only while conditions are comfortable. But when life shifts unexpectedly, and people reach their limits, who or what is left covering you then?
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with open hearts. Thank You for being our refuge, our strength, and our covering. Help us to recognise You as our source above all else. Where we have leaned too heavily on people, realign us. Where we have felt exposed, remind us that we are hidden in You. Let Your Holy Spirit guide us into truth and settle us in the security that only comes from You. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen.
Having come to the end of this series, I think we can safely conclude and settle this within ourselves. People have a role to play in our lives, as do we in their lives, but we are not the source.
We can advise. We can encourage. People can stand with us, and we can stand with others for a time. But no one can carry what only God was meant to carry.
This, Family, is where clarity must come.
Psalm 91:1–2 (KJV) says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
That word shadow speaks to covering. Not something temporary. Not something conditional. But something that remains because it is tied to God Himself.
Family, this is not the kind of covering that depends on who shows up for you. This is the kind of covering that remains even when no one does.
There are moments when we expect people to be there, and they are not. And truth be told, moments when we couldn’t be there for others as well. Moments when we reach out, or someone reaches out to us, and there is no response. Moments when what we thought would hold us steady suddenly give way.
And in those moments, we are faced with a deeper truth: What we are truly covered by will reveal itself.
Scripture brings us back to this in Colossians 3:3 (KJV), “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Your life is not exposed in the way you think. It is hidden—secured—in Christ. That is a level of covering that no person can provide, which is why we must be careful not to elevate people beyond their place.
Jeremiah 17:7 (KJV) says, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.” When our trust is rooted in God, we are not shaken by the limitations of people. We understand their role without making them our foundation.
There are times when people step in and help us, and it is clear that God sent them. I’ve had a few such occasions in this ministry. But even in those moments, they needed to understand, and so did I, that they were just vessels, not the source. So that when they contributed and moved on, there would be no bitterness because things didn’t go their way or end up my way.
2 Corinthians 9:8 (KJV) says, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you…” Not people. God. He is the one who ensures that what we need reaches us, whether through people, circumstances, or unexpected provision.
And this is where balance comes in.
We appreciate people, but we do not depend on them. We receive support, but we do not anchor ourselves in it. We accept guidance, but we still go to God first.
Because if our covering is tied to people, it will fluctuate. People grow tired. People misunderstand. People are limited. But God is not. Hallelujah.
Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV) says, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed… they are new every morning…” That kind of consistency is part of God’s covering. It does not wear out. It does not change with circumstances. It does not fail.
With people, they forget about you in a New York minute and move right along as if you never existed! Of course, all of this does not hold true for covenanted relationships. One of these days, we will get into that as a topic - covenant relationships.
But here’s the thing: There are also times when God allows us to feel the absence of people, not to expose us, but to draw us back to Him.
To remind us: God is our refuge. He is our covering. He is our source.
Isaiah 25:4 (KJV) says, “For thou hast been a strength to the poor… a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat…” That is God’s role in our lives. Not temporary support, but enduring protection.
And when that becomes real to us, something shifts. Because we would no longer panic when people are not available. We would no longer feel uncovered when others fall short. We would no longer measure our security by human presence. Because again, if we didn’t know before, we now know where our covering comes from. And for those who were already assured, this is a reminder. Amen?!
By no means am I suggesting that we reject people. What this means is that we must place them correctly. They are support. God is source.
Psalm 121:1–2 (KJV) says, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills… My help cometh from the Lord…” That is the alignment. Help may come through people, but it originates from God.
And when that order is established, everything else settles. We are no longer chasing support; we are resting in God. We are no longer dependent; we are established. We are no longer exposed; we are covered: Not by chance. Not by circumstance. But by God Himself.
And that is the only covering that never fails.
