DAY 5 | You’ve Changed… But This One Thing Hasn’t (Let Go and Transform)

Have we ever taken a step back and realised—were not who we used to be?

Wait a minute: I’ve grown. You’ve matured. We’ve come a long way.

But yet… there’s still that one thing. Because nobody is perfect, right?

There’s that one reaction when we’re triggered. That one mindset we fall back into/under pressure. That one pattern that keeps repeating itself.

That’s frustrating. Because it feels like we’ve made progress… but not enough.

When we get to this point, we realise that this is where surrender goes deeper. Because it’s one thing to grow in visible areas, but it’s quite another thing to deal with the patterns that are still hidden within us. You know, that grumpy old self that you hide from everyone outside your family so that everyone else thinks you’re the nicest person ever.

Family, Scripture calls us to that level of transformation…where we can honestly examine ourselves and allow God to transform us.

Ephesians 4:22–24 (KJV) says, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man…And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

If transformation were automatic, that would save us some heartache and embarrassment when we try to change but fall right back in the same mess shortly thereafter. So, we know transformation is a process.

We have to put off… and we have to be renewed. And that renewal happens in our thinking. Because many times, the reason the pattern is still there… is because the mindset behind it is still there.

We’ve changed behaviour in some areas… but we haven’t fully surrendered how we think, how we respond, how we process. And that’s why our bad behaviour, that terrible habit, keeps showing up.

And this is not about condemnation—it’s about awareness.

Lamentations 3:40 (KJV) says, “Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.”

That means we don’t ignore the pattern… we examine it. We don’t excuse it… we bring it before God. And this is where it becomes practical. Because that “one thing” can look different for each of us.

For some, it’s a reaction—quick to anger, quick to shut down, quick to withdraw. For some, it’s a mindset—fear, doubt, overthinking, negativity. For others, it’s a pattern—returning to the same habits, the same responses, the same cycles.

And no matter how much we grow in other areas… that one thing keeps reminding us—there’s still work to be done.

But here’s the key. God is not just interested in our progress—He is committed to our transformation. “But we all… are changed into the same image from glory to glory…” (2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV).

Because at the end of the day, transformation requires surrender. It requires us to stop just managing the pattern… and start addressing the root. We can no longer shove issues under the carpet and move right along as if there’s no problem.

Scripture gives us further direction.

Romans 8:5 (KJV) says, “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”

Family, what we continually set our minds on will shape how we respond. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6 KJV).

So if the mindset doesn’t change… the pattern won’t either. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2 KJV).

And for the mindset and the patterns to change, we have to change what we allow into the ear gates. “Take heed what ye hear…” (Mark 4:24 KJV).

This is where we have to be intentional. Not just praying about it… but surrendering it. Not just acknowledging it… but allowing God to renew us in that area. Because real growth is not just what people see. It’s what changes within us.

So what does surrender look like here?

It looks like being honest about that one area.

It looks like bringing it before God consistently.

It looks like choosing a different response—even when the old one feels natural.

It looks like allowing God to reshape how we think… so our reactions begin to change.

Are we getting it? Are we seeing ourselves? Are we understanding what we need to do?

Family, as Christians, it is not enough to just grow. We must be transformed. Colossians 3:10 KJV, “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

So if we recognise that one thing today… that one reaction, that one mindset, that one pattern…What do we do? We surrender it to God. We do not ignore it.

Because growth is not complete until our patterns change.

And when our patterns change… our lives begin to reflect the transformation God has been doing within us all along.
