DAY 4 DEVOTIONAL | Why Can’t I Hear God? Creating Space to Listen Clearly

Life gets so busy sometimes.
And it’s in these times that we find ourselves becoming less motivated to study the Word of God. Because we are so tired after doing what we think is important at the time, we just want to relax or crash, as we say colloquially.
This is the time when sensitivity to God’s voice diminishes.
As believers, we often question why God feels distant or unclear. This is an argument that unbelievers use as well, as they doubt the existence of God.
Yet Scripture shows that God often speaks when His people intentionally make space to listen. Clarity is not produced by striving, but by stillness and attentiveness.
The prophet Habakkuk demonstrates this.
Habakkuk 2:1 (KJV) “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.”
Habakkuk positioned himself to listen. He did not rush God or demand immediate answers. He waited with expectation.
This teaches us that hearing God often requires intentional positioning; mentally, spiritually, and sometimes physically.
Scripture also shows that inner stillness matters as much as external quiet.
Psalm 131:2 (KJV) “Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.”
A quieted soul is not anxious or demanding. It is settled and receptive. When the soul is restless, God’s voice can be drowned out by internal noise. Stillness, on the other hand, creates space for clarity.
Jesus Himself modeled the discipline of making space to hear God.
Mark 1:35 (KJV) “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”
Though surrounded by constant demands, Jesus withdrew intentionally. If the Son of God made space to listen to the Father, believers should not expect clarity without doing the same.
Creating space to hear God clearly does not mean withdrawing from life, but intentionally reducing noise, those external distractions, internal anxieties, and spiritual clutter.
Obedience to what God has already revealed prepares the heart to receive further guidance.
We must understand that God speaks consistently. Stillness does not make God speak; it makes us able to hear.
So we can ask ourselves today: What noise do I need to reduce so I can hear God more clearly?
For indeed, it is most important for us to hear God speaking to us, so that we can walk in alignment with His will, respond in obedience, and live with clarity rather than confusion.
