Opening Prayer:
Almighty God, thank You for being the One who upholds everything by Your power. Today, as we reflect on what mankind has built, open our hearts to see how much greater You are. Help us stand in awe of Your sovereignty and build our faith on the sure foundation of Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Devotional:
Have you ever stood at the base of a skyscraper and looked up?
Some buildings stretch so high into the sky that you almost lose your balance gazing at them. It’s amazing. Man has figured out how to stack steel, glass, and concrete into towers that scrape the clouds.
But here’s the question: If man can build that high, how much higher can God reach?
Before we answer that, let’s take a moment to understand what man has really done.
Skyscrapers are symbols of progress and ambition. With enough resources and vision, humans have pierced the skyline in ways once thought impossible. Consider these marvels. And I say marvels because this is information I myself did not know about, and I’m like Wow!
Burj Khalifa (BURJ kah-LEE-fah) in Dubai, UAE Currently the tallest building in the world, standing at 828 meters or 2,717 feet. This building has 163 floors above ground
We go to Shanghai, China for the (SHANG-hai), for a building which reaches 632 meters or 2,073 feet into the sky. The Shanghai Tower is home to the world’s fastest elevators, moving at 46 mph.
Have you heard about the Abraj Al-Bait (uh-BRAHJ al-BAYT) Clock Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia? Well, this skyscraper stands at 601 meters or 1,972 feet and features the largest clock face in the world.
How about the Lotte (LOH-tay) World Tower in Seoul, South Korea? This building is 555 meters or 1,819 feet tall and is known for its multi-use design, combining hotel, offices, and retail.
Closer to home for many of us is the One World Trade Center in New York City, USA. The One World Trade Center measures 541 meters or 1,776 feet, in symbolic reference to the year of U.S. independence. This skyscraper was built as a monument of resilience after 9/11
Now, these towers didn’t just appear. They required deep foundations, careful calculations, years of labour, and constant upkeep. And even still, catch this: they are vulnerable to time, nature, and human limitation.
Are you following, Family?
Now, let’s compare all of that to God.
Colossians 1:17 (NLT) tells us: “He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together.”
Family, God doesn’t just build—He sustains. He doesn't rely on beams, bolts, or permits. From galaxies to atoms, from hearts to nations, He holds everything in balance with His Word alone.
Hebrews 1:3 (AMP) says: “He is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God...upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word…”
So, Family, while we may be amazed by human engineering, we must understand and acknowledge that it is God who created the laws of physics that make such buildings possible in the first place.
Romans 11:36 (NLT) “For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.”
John 1:3 (NLT)“God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.”
There are limitations as to what man can do, which is why, while a tower may scrape the sky, it cannot touch the heavens.
Remember the tower of Babel and what God did when there was an attempt by man to do that?
Genesis 11:5–9 (NLT) “But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.”
That scripture shows clearly, Family, that man’s efforts have limits, but God’s power has no limits.
Isaiah 40:28–29 (MSG) asks us: “Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening? God doesn’t come and go. God lasts. He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn’t get tired out...He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts.”
What are we saying here today? Skyscrapers can give us a temporary sense of wonder. But only God can give us strength, purpose, and eternal security.
Psalm 125:1 (NKJV) affirms: “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.”
So, the next time you see a city skyline or a photo of one of these towers, let your heart be stirred—not just by what man can build, but by the God who is limitless, unshakable, and eternally sovereign.
Because truly… if man can build that—what more can God do?
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for being our unshakable foundation. God, we choose to trust You more than we trust anything built by human hands. Let Your Word hold us steady when the winds blow. Strengthen our faith to believe that Your power upholds all things—including all of us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
