Habakkuk 3:19 in the New International Reader’s Version says: “The Lord and King gives me strength. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer. He helps me walk on the highest places.”
How many of us know some people who came from very humble beginnings and received help to go to study and now they have a good job? Or someone who was sitting down quietly or not used in church over the years, and God used someone to ignite Holy Ghost fire in them, and now they run a thriving ministry? But now that they are at the top, they look down on you still struggling, not yet where you hope to get. Instead of helping you as they received help, they are on their proverbial high horse without looking back to extend the same grace and support they once received.
We won’t go there this morning, right? For we know that it is God who sets up kings, and what? Correct!
Psalm 75:6–7 (NIV) says: “No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt themselves. It is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another.”
Today, I want to talk about Walking with Confidence: Secure Steps in Christ…because there is a huge difference here.
We are all encouraged to walk with confidence, but this is not about arrogance or trusting in ourselves. Rather, it is about trusting that Christ secures every step we take.
Habakkuk declared this truth even while facing uncertain times.
God assured him that his steps would be steady, like the feet of deer, even on rugged paths.
Psalm 37:23–24 (NKJV) reminds us: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.”
Our steps are not random. God delights in guiding us, and even when we stumble, His hand keeps us from falling completely. And we know this to be true because none of us would be here if that were not so. Amen?!
In Proverbs 16:9 (ESV), we read: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Confidence grows when we realize God is not only aware of our path, but He is actively securing it.
Jesus Himself spoke of walking in light, not fear.
John 8:12 (NIV) says: “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
So, confidence comes from walking in the light of God, knowing darkness cannot overcome us.
The Apostle Paul echoes this in 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Faith-filled steps may not always see the whole path ahead, but they rest securely in God’s promises.
Sometimes insecurity makes us hesitant. We don’t make the first step to pursue what God has placed in our hearts, to apply for that opportunity, to speak up when He gives us a word, or to walk boldly in the calling He has given us.
Instead, we become shy, we second-guess ourselves, we forget that our confidence is not in our ability but in Christ, who establishes our steps.
Isaiah 30:21 (NRSV) offers this assurance: “And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Family, can we be reminded today that we are never walking blindly? God whispers direction and confirms His way in us, through us, with us, all of the time. But guess what? Are we listening!
The message today is: walk with confidence in Christ even though you may be facing shaky ground. Why? Because you know that you know that you know, a million times over, that, like Habakkuk, our footing is made secure by God Himself.
Glory to God.
We can move forward boldly to do the very things God has called us to—whether it’s stepping into new responsibilities, pursuing dreams that seemed out of reach, serving in ministry, reconciling relationships, or simply taking the next step of faith—because our confidence rests not in ourselves, but in Christ who secures every step.
Remember, if we allow Him, God will order our steps, He will hold us up when we stumble, and He will continue to make every path straight by His Hand.
May today, as we walk confidently, that we would realize that it is not in our own ability, but because our steps are secured in Christ Jesus. And as a result, we would give Him all the glory.
