You’re Moving… But Did God Actually Tell You To? | Stop Mishearing God | Fix Your Relationships (Day 4)

Family, one of the most sensitive and serious things we can say is, “God told me.” Because when we say that, we are not just expressing a feeling. We are attaching God’s name to a decision.

And the truth is, not everything we move into is something God actually said.

Proverbs 16:9 (KJV) reminds us, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” And we have seen this play out in our lives and that of others as well: We plan, decide, and even convince ourselves of a direction, but that does not automatically mean it came from God.

Family, this is where we have to be careful.

Because sometimes what we call “God said,” or a “Holy Spirit move”, is actually what we wanted, what we felt like doing, or what made sense to us at the time.

Some people have entered relationships, saying God led them there. Some have started businesses. Left jobs. Joined ministries. Made major life decisions, fully convinced that God spoke.

But somewhere along the way, things became confusing. Strained. Difficult in a way that does not produce growth, but constant instability.

Now, the question becomes, is this God testing me… or could it be that God never said it in the first place?

Psalm 37:23 (KJV) says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” When God directs something, there is alignment. Not perfection, but direction. Not confusion, but clarity over time.

Again, that does not mean there will not be challenges. But there is a difference between a test that builds you and a decision that drains you because it was never God’s instruction.

Of course, this is where many of us struggle.

Because once we have said, “God told me,” it becomes difficult to step back and admit, “Well, maybe that was me.”

Pride gets involved. Fear of what others will say. Embarrassment. The feeling that we have to stay in something just to prove we heard God correctly.

But Family, God is not asking us to stay in error to protect our image. He wants us to walk in truth.

John 8:32 (KJV): “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” And Proverbs 28:13 (KJV): “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

So there is no shame in going back to God, asking for clarity, and allowing Him to correct us or bring us into a true understanding of what He said in the first place.

James 1:5 (KJV) says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”

So if we have moved ahead of Him, as we often do, we are still alive, right? That means we can come into realignment.

Because God does not want to trap us in a wrong decision. He wants to guide us into the right one.

So how do we know if God really said something? Family, it must align with His Word. It will not contradict His character. And over time, it will produce fruit, not confusion.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV) says, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…” That does not mean everything will be easy, but it means we are not constantly unsettled, unstable, and unsure.

Some of us need to be honest with ourselves!

We are in situations we said God led us into, but deep down, we know something is not right.

And today is not about condemnation. It is about correction.

Because it is better to step out of something God did not say than to remain in it trying to prove that He did. Because God says what He means and means what He says.

Numbers 23:19 (KJV) tells us: “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”

So today, we pause. Shall we? We ask God again. We lay down our assumptions. And we choose truth over pride.

Why? Because moving forward is not the goal. Moving forward in the direction God actually gave? That’s the goal!
